What an electric counterbalance forklift is
An electric forklift is a counterbalance truck powered by a traction battery instead of a diesel or LPG engine. The load sits on the forks ahead of the front wheels, balanced by the truck and battery behind. With no exhaust fumes where it works, it is well suited to indoor use.
Some trucks here run on lead-acid, some on lithium-ion, and several are listed with either. The two differ in how they are charged and looked after, so the battery is chosen at the specification stage. See lithium forklifts for the lithium models on their own, or our lithium vs lead-acid vs diesel guide for the differences.
Jobs and sites these trucks suit
Most electric forklifts suit warehouses, production areas and loading bays with firm, level floors. Within this range:
- The N Series is designed for indoor use, with a compact chassis, lead-acid or lithium batteries and optional battery side extraction.
- Three-wheel forklifts turn in a small circle: the FE3R08N (800 kg) has a 1,160 mm turning radius.
- The C Series runs on cushion (solid) tyres and is built for compact size and manoeuvrability. It includes the C Series 4 Wheel Electric Forklift (FE4P25/32C).
- Cold stores: the N Series Electric Forklift for Cold Storage, rated from 1,600 to 3,500 kg.
- Rougher ground: the FE2RT18/25 rough terrain forklift, in lithium or lead-acid versions at 1,800 or 2,500 kg.
- Heavy loads: heavy-duty A, N and N2 Series trucks from 6 t to 18 t.
How to choose a truck in this range
Start with your heaviest load, then check the rated capacity in the spec table. The range falls into five bands:
Then check the fit on site. Turning radii run from 1,160 mm to 5,175 mm, and listed service weights from 1,800 kg to 14,100 kg, which matters for floors and ramps. Battery voltages run from 24 V to 608 V, and many models list more than one battery capacity, so match the battery to your shift length.
- 0.8 to 1.2 t: FE3R08-12N three-wheel trucks on a 24 V battery.
- 1.5 to 2 t: including the 1.5 tonne CPD15-A2 and CPD-15AS, plus three-wheel and Q Series trucks.
- 2.27 to 3.8 t: 2.5 tonne models in the A, N and Q Series, up to 3.8 t, plus C Series cushion-tyre trucks rated at 2,270 and 2,950 kg.
- 4 to 5.5 t: NP, Q and A Series trucks.
- 6 to 18 t: heavy N, N2 and A Series trucks.
