What is a heavy duty forklift?
There is no fixed industry definition, so here heavy duty means forklifts rated from 4,000 kg to 18,000 kg: nine Noblelift model families, from 4 tonne trucks to 18 tonne machines.
Each family is IC (diesel/LPG) or electric. The A Series, a universal platform for electric and IC trucks, runs from 4 to 18 tonnes in both IC and lithium form. The N Series is built for indoor use with a compact chassis, and the Q Series covers performance lithium forklifts at 4 to 5 tonnes.
Jobs and sites that suit a heavy duty forklift
Heavy duty trucks are typically used for steel, timber, stone, blocks, machinery and oversized pallets, in builders' merchants, manufacturing plants and heavy distribution yards.
Let the site decide the power type. Diesel/LPG suits yards and outdoor work (see our diesel and LPG forklifts), while electric trucks produce no exhaust at the point of use. On sloped yards, compare the listed maximum gradient figures: laden, the 14 to 18 tonne IC trucks are listed at 31–35% and the lithium equivalents at 20–24%.
Choosing a 5 tonne, 10 tonne or 18 tonne forklift
Start with your heaviest real load, then pick the band and power type:
Then check your site. Turning radius runs from 2,690 mm (Q Series) to 5,175 mm (16 and 18 tonne L models). Most spec tables quote a 3 m lift height; the 14 and 16 tonne IC trucks are listed at 3 m or 4 m, and the 18 tonne CPCD180L at 4 m. Listed service weights for the 4 to 10 tonne trucks run from 6,200 kg to 14,100 kg, so confirm floor and ramp ratings. Our lithium vs lead-acid vs diesel guide covers the power trade-offs.
- 4 to 5.5 tonnes: IC trucks at 4, 4.5 and 5 tonnes; A Series lithium up to 5.5 tonnes; Q Series lithium at 4 to 5 tonnes.
- 6 to 10 tonnes: four model families. IC trucks at 6, 7, 8.5, 9 and 10 tonnes; N Series electric at 6, 7 and 8 tonnes with lead-acid or lithium batteries; A Series lithium from 6 to 10 tonnes; N2 Series lithium from 8 to 10 tonnes.
- 14 to 18 tonnes: IC trucks with Volvo or Weichai engines, or A Series lithium on a 608 V battery. Most are rated at a 1,200 mm load centre (900 mm on the 16 tonne CPCD160 and CPD160).
